Legal action was taken against Flaubert for Madame Bovary but was acquitted. Nevertheless, the ordeal left him highly stressed and led him to abandon civilization to write a historical novel, which became Salammbo. Salammbo is set in Carthage before and during the Mercenary Revolt in the 3rd century BC. The theme of the novel is based on 20 or so lines from a volume of Histories.
